This is beautiful old, whatI believe to be a German Mensur Korbschlager, fencing saber.I have had 2 or 3 of these in my life, but never in this excellent condition, with the metal bowl inside the guard, intact with the school or fencing fraternity colors so vibrant and in wonderful condition.The Mensur fencers would stand at arm\'s length and attack the unprotected parts of their adversaries; dodgingor avoidanceof blows(other than deflection by sword), was not allowed, aspart of the exercise was the stoic enduranceof pain.Each fencer would have a doctor who coulddress the wounds(which were expected), callthe fight or save their fighters.The famous German generals of WW1, who proudly bore scars on their faces, probably received them in one of these matches.The diamond shaped blade measures approx.34\" long and almost 5/8\" wide.It has scattered areas of light pitting and scratches throughout the blade as well as some type of worn panel on either side.The tip is flat, butnot dull; Iwas able to slash a cardboard box with it.The handle is in good condition and it even has the leather finger loop still present.The guard measures 7\"x 9\" and the handle is another 6\" making the sword 40\" long, so please understand the postage cost.Other countries that practiced Mensur Fencing were Austria, Switzerland, Latvia, Estonia, Flanders, Lithuania, and Poland.I also got a picture off of the internet showing the use of the sword; IAM NOT INCLUDING THIS PICTURE OR ANY OTHERS.The there is no scabbard.
