Dimensions: 32x20 cm (12.59x7.87 inches)This is an authentic 100% antique greek icon of the Virgin Mary and Saint George. It is probably painted in Northern Greece at this time in the mid 19th century.
The icon follows a classic type of icons which was painted for the private devotion and veneration of a family, the depiction of Saint George on the lower part of the icon probaly was the patron Saint of the icon\'s owner.
The icon is painted in a workshop of Northern Greece, it has very vivid colours with light blue background and a light pink on the Virgin\'s dress, all the colors are very vivid and optimist and they belong to a workshop of Macedonia or Northern Thessaly - in central - Northern Greece.
The type of the Virgin is the classic type of Odeghitria ( the Virgin who is holding and showing to us Christ), it is written in Greek Letter \'\'ΗΕΛΕΟΥΣΑ\'\' ( the Mercyfull) , on the lower part of the icon there is painted Saint George slaying the dragon and riding a brown horse, very rare because usually Saint George on th byzantine icons is riding white horse.
Very nice icon, it is very well preserved.
The icon is a classic work of this period, the painting techinique is egg tempera on board and the colors are true mineral pigments mixed with yolk egg and vinegar as it is used in the medieval painting technique.. The icon is 100% authentic, unrestored and has a very nice light yellow patine by the oxidation of the old varnish which is pribably pine tree resin.
