Antique Late Meiji Period Japanese cabinet or cupboard. The “yosegi” technique was a decoration which relied on the inherent beauty, grain and natural colors of various kinds of wood. Slices of different woods were cut into various shapes and sizes and reassembled into one sheet to enable the grains of each slice to appear more distinctive. The checkerboard pattern was called “ichi-matsu yosegi.” which reminds me of Tunbridge wear! I think it is mainly constructed from Rosewood, but I\'m not an expert

It has really unusual sword designs on the handles of the drawers.

No key, as it must of been forced to open at one time.

It would have kept the precious household items, or scholars items of brushes, inks etc.

It is a strange construction in that it looks as if it was joined to another piece at one time.

It is lightweight and would be easy to hang on the wall or stand on the surface.
