Wonderful Japanese Satsuma, Meiji Period (1868-1913), signed Vase. A tapered ovoid body resting on a ring foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with everted mouth, moulded in relief with a coiled dragon and decorated in overglaze enamels and gilding with Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy) surrounded by various Arhats or Buddhist acolytes, marked to the base with the factory name \"Uchida\" beneath the Shimazu mon. Above the name of the manufacturer can be seen a rebus, a cross within a circle. This is the \"Mon\" or family emblem of the Shimazu clan who had controlled the Satsuma region from the mid 17th Century until the Meiji revolution. It features a raised swirling three-claw dragon. Dimensions are approx 9.5 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide at the shoulder of the vase. This is an exceptional piece in excellent condition.
