ANTIQUE JAPANESE SHAKUDO (?) MIXED METAL BRONZE GOLD COPPER SHIBAYAMA VASE:
$77.44

Beautiful quality Antique Japanese bronze vase with SIX applied panels with various finely executed relief mixed metal scenes. The larger one with 3 figures is particularly interesting in that it depicts a seated person in full western military outfit along with a figure in traditional Japanese military costume and a seated European female figure holding a fan. Not sure of the significance of this scene as the rest of the panels depict traditional Japanese folk lore scenes. The vase appears to be made of patinated bronze with a patch of rubbing on the lower half of the vase. This patch measures approx 1.5 inches (4cm) by 1 inch (3cm) and can be seen in the individual photos. The rest of the vase is fine. The vase is of barrel shape with angular sides. Each angled section has two applied panels finely decorated with relief figures made from mixed metals which are copper and gold. The top section of the vase has an applied oval panel depicting a Hare (or Rabbit) rowing a boat with Fox on the front who is holding a net. The second applied panel is round and depicts an animal headed figure holding a traditional shaped bucket and a sign with in the foreground a figure seated on the floor with calligraphy brush and ink stone. These are picked out with copper and gold. The middle section of the vase has a main applied rectangular panel a central seated make figure dressed in military outfit with fringed epaulettes and diagonal sash buckle. In front of him stands a differently dressed soldier. Sat on a chair to their left is a female figure holding a fan. The other applied panel is a seated male figure holding a bowl.Beside him is a basket and a double gourd shaped vessel. The bottom section features an applied circular panel with a turtle (possibly Minogame) the other panel on this section is peach shaped and features in relief a person crouching with a traditional water bucket with tied package in the foreground. Please bear in mind that I am not an expert on Japanese mythology so am only able to describe things as I see them...I trust that the photos with my descriptions will enable you to identify this item to your satisfaction.
Please ask if you have any questions. The vase has a flat base which is 1.5 inches (4cm) diameter and the entire vase is unsigned .The flared top of the vase measures 1.75 inches (4.5cm) diameter and the top is very slightly lopsided (see photo). The panels are of patinated bronze with relief work executed in Copper and Gold highlights.I AM HAPPY TO SHIP WORLD WIDE.
