Antique Late 19thC Japanese Satsuma Porcelain Dragon Handled Basket
Up for offers is thisAntique Late 19thC Japanese Satsuma Porcelain Dragon Handled Basket. Measuring 6\" high to the top side of the basket handle x 9 3/8\" wide. This porcelain Satsuma handled basket is decorated with a dragon in the center inside of the basket in dark navy blue, oxblood red and gold gilding. The handle has a bamboo shape with a floral design in same colors. All around the sides ans side handles of the basket an exquisite and finely detailed stylized floral design that uses the same colors with the addition of turquoise blue. The workmanship is superb. The dragon is highly detailed and quite impressive with it\'s applied textured gold gilt. Enlarge photos. to see the exquisite details.
Signed on the underside with the Shimazu circle with the cross in black and Japanese characters in gold gilt underneath. This piece was made during the Late 19thC of the Meiji period.
Condition is very good. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There is some light wear, minor paint loss to the gold gilt top rim (photo # 1) and on the inside of the basket there is some tiny spots that may have been done in the manufacturing process. Along the outside side there is am impress area that was most definitely made in the manufacturing. I saw a light small age discoloration spot on the inside of the handle. No other chips or cracks. The crackle glaze of Satsuma wares can be seen under magnification.
