This is the purchase log of a commercial ship captain, it seems by the name John Fordham, likely a member of the well-known old Fordham family of Suffolk County, Long Island. Entries date from 1850 to about 1865 and seem to be for several schooners -- the Schooner Home, Schooner General Merion, and Schooner George & Edger. These were commercial vessels which traveled in the Northeast, often along the rivers -- Port Jefferson, Philadelphia, Pawtucket, Albany, Cohasset are among many ports cited. Recorded are all manner of wharfage fees, goods transported, and expenses incurred, all scrupulously dated. Tucked in the pages are many receipts from local vendors, some with beautiful logo illustrations.
The log is in pretty good condition considering the age. There are only a few loose pages, mostly pages are tight in the binding. Cover is pretty good, too. And there is no water damage or mildew, which seems remarkable considering its days on the sea. The log was examined this week at Doyle Galleries, NYC.While it is not appropriate for their sale as the log is not specifically about whaling, the Gold Rush, or other specific interests, their resident book expert was impressed by the quality and figured the value at somewhere between $400-$500.
