Thisis anantique Mettlach 1/2L German BeerStein, #2083, by Villeroy and Boch entitled \"Boar Hunt.\" The stein features a fantastic pictorial landscape with a castle in the background with hunters, deer, dogs and a wild boar.One hunter is mounted on horseback blowing a horn while others on foot hold board speers. The foot of the stein is flared and highly glossed with gold and blue egg and darttype pattern. The body of the stein has a matte finish but the gold highlighted on certain portions of the stein is very shiny. The inlay lid features St. Hubertis, the patron saint of hunters. This one has the ball thumb lift that is typical of this stein. The bottom bares the Mettlach abbey mark and the date of 1892.
This stein is valued in the 2005 edition of The Mettlach Book by Gary Kirsner at $800-$1,000. The online website, \"The BeerStein Library\" values this stein at $450-$600. The listing is starting at the low end of the value range.
The stein is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or hairlines. There is yellow staining on the inside of the stein as would be expected from age and use. The pewter rim around the inlay seems to be slightly raised on the front portion, but the inlay appears undamaged.
