In the late 17th century, the Bishop ofMexico authorized a Catholic devotional medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Alimited number of 2 inch bronze medals were minted in Rome, and used as giftsfor wealthy Catholic patrons.

That medal helped the Bishop (Francisco de Aguiar ySeijas) fund the Building of the new Basilica from 1682-1708; one of thosemedals from my mother’s collection, is offered here for your consideration.

Bertha (the late founder of Church-Woman Antiques, whopassed away in 2010), became the principal collector of these medals; none haveever come up for sale, and none are available today except here; in short, she acquired all available medals during her lifetime of collecting all overthe world.

Each medal you receive will be special. The medal you see in the postedpictures, is the medal from her collection you will receive.

Good luck offerding!

The story of the 1531 Guadalupe apparition of theVirgin Mother Mary is one of the most fascinating in all of Catholic lore.According to accounts, a poor Indian by the name of Juan Diego came across avision of what he described as a \'lady from heaven\' while on a mountainside inNorthwest Mexico City. According to Diego, this woman instructed him to createa temple at the site of this vision. In addition, she somehow imprinted herlikeness into his cactus-cloth. Although such cloth normally deterioratesrapidly over time, Diego\'s cloth survives to this day, more than 470 yearsafter the apparition, in defiance of scientific rationale. Today, the shrine ofOur Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most important Catholic churches in theWestern hemisphere. All told, more than 10 million people visit the Basilica ofOur Lady of Guadalupe every year. Pope John Paul II, for his part, madepilgrimages to this Mexican sanctuary four times during his tenure as theleader of the Catholic Church. As with the so-called Miraculous Medal, whichstirred religious feeling in 19th century France, the Our Lady of Guadalupemedal has helped to focus Catholic passions in America.
