Antique Primitive Metal Cow Bell Leather Strap Buckle Rustic Farmhouse Décor :
Over 6 decades ago my maiden aunt packed up all of the contents of the southern Ohio family farmstead, put them in storage, and moved to the east coast where she spent her adult years in higher education. She never stopped dreaming of the house she would one day own, filled with the saved relics of her past. Sadly, the storage fees she paid would have been a sizeable down payment on that dream cottage, but she could not ever bring herself to stop dreaming and empty the storage space, nor could she commit to purchasing a home. At age 94, she died without ever realizing her dream.
Among the stored treasures was this metal cow bell. I know that it was from the family farm, and stored as is in the early 1950’s, but have no way of determining how old it was before it was packed away. I am guessing it is from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s, but could be even older.
I have no memory of any mention of cows on the farm, but there was a faithful old horse named “Prince”. Whether Prince wore this bell or it was attached to a more temporary resident, it has seen better days. I have made no attempt to clean it. It is coated with rust and coal dust from the farmhouse where it was stored. The old coal furnace left its mark on all of the belongings stored there.
A metal band 5/8” wide is formed into a strap holder on top of the bell. The heavy leather strap with metal buckle is in serious need of cleaning, and had one section of torn places (see photo). As I was stretching it out to measure it, the strap tore into two pieces, so it may be beyond restoration.
The clapper to the bell is missing, rendering it mute. Were it able to talk, the stories it could tell would be remarkable, I am sure.
