Antique Cameo…..

Very unusual Cameo the like of which I have not seen before.

This \"face on\" subject (which is unusual in itself as the majority show heads in profile) is of the Greek/Olympian God Dionysus and features the Panther or Leopard - something that is associated with Dionysus but rarely seen on Cameos with the Olympian God.

This is a fabulous large cameo and it is certainly pre Victorian, the frame is Vermeil, gold plated/washed on either a silver or base metal (its quite light, possibly hollow.

It is very large being 2 3/4\" (7cm) tall x 2 1/4\" (5.5cm) wide and weighs only 21.9g which is fairly lightweight for such a large Cameo.

It is in fabulous condition with the exception of a stress fracture on the right of the wrist which travels down to the elbow and this is best explained by viewing the close up pictures above.
