*HISTORICAL FACTS RE:Santo Nino de Atocha

In the 13th century, Spain was under the Muslim rule. The townof Atocha was lost to the Muslims, and many Christians there were takenprisoners as spoils of war. The Christian prisoners were not fed by thejailers, but by family members who brought them food. According to legend, theCaliph ordered that only children under the age of 12 were permitted to bringfood. Conditions became difficult, for many men didn’t have small children. Thewomen of Atocha prayed before the statue of Our Lady of Atocha to ask her sonJesus for help.

Reports soon began circulating among the people of Atocha that anunknown child under the age of twelve and dressed in pilgrim\'s clothing, hadbegun to bring food to prisoners at night. The women of the town returned toOur Lady of Atocha to thank the Virgin for her intercession, and noticed thatthe shoes worn by the Infant Jesus in her arms, were tattered and dusty. Theyreplaced the shoes of the Infant Jesus, but they became worn again. Thepeople of Atocha took this as a sign that it was the Infant Jesus who went outevery night to help those in need!
