Antique Solid Silver Tulip Beaker Strasbourg Style Schuch 1732:
$2350.00

118 grams or 3.79 troy ounces
3 ¼” tall, 3 3/8” wide, 2 5/8” deep. This is a very rare Augsburg beaker, the shape is that of a pinched tulip beaker almost exclusively made in Strasbourg.

The maker is Carl Schuch who was born in 1652 and became a master silversmith in 1682 and died in 1731. The maker’s mark is the second one shown in Seling #1793. Schuch had a very long career and his second mark had a somewhat thicker C than the earlier mark. The other mark is the Augsburg date mark for 1732-33 and is shown in the supplement to Seling # 199**.
So there is an obvious discrepancy, the simple explanation is that the widow Schuch probably kept the shop open and sold previously made, but only recently dated silver. Or perhaps Seling is slightly wrong as to the date stamp.
When I say this shape is almost always from Strasbourg it is not an exaggeration. I have heard of two others, and seen a nicer one pictured in Seling. This type of beaker is probably the single most sought after form in French silver. Of course Strasbourg silver beaker is far more expensive on average than Augsburg. However while plain I think the rarity of form should explain the price. The beaker is in very good condition it has two small shallow dents. The patina is as expected on a piece of this age. There have been no initial or crest removals. There is some solder showing on the outside where the base is joined to body, it is not soft solder and it looks to me like it might have always there. Of course his age, 79, or the possibility that it was actually made by an apprentice would explain a sloppy join. I have had this piece for decades, I bought it to match a Strasbourg beaker I own. I never noticed the solder, but it seems a bit yellower in the photos shown, than it appears in real life, I only just noticed it. There is still visible gilding on the inside of the beaker.
