Antique sterling silver coin purse from 1918. The pursewas a presentation gift at the launching of the U.S. destroyer Greene. The Greene was launched on November 2, 1918 at the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Squantum Works, Fore River plant.Purse weighs 136 grams. The money clip on inside lid is missing along with the coin holder. Hinge and clasp are good. The inscription inside reads:

Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp LtdSquantum Works Fore River Plant/ Presented To/ Mrs. Mary Greene Conover/ launching/ U.S. Destroyer Greene/ November 2, 1918

From MOLLUS web site: The USS Greene, a 1215-ton Clemson class destroyer, was built at Squantum, Massachusetts. Commissioned in May 1919 and named for Commander Samuel Dana Greene, she made a cruise to France and England in June and July, before transferring to the Pacific later in the year. In reserve from March 1920 until September of 1921, she was then briefly active along the west coast but decommissioned in June 1922 and remained in that status for the next 18 years.

  • From 1866-1868 he served as instructor of mathematics at the US Naval Academy. He briefly returned to ship life, before teaching astronomy, navigation and surveying at the Academy in 1871-1875. He earned promotion to commander during this period and returned to the sea before serving as assistant superintendent of the Academy from 1878-1882. He served another stint as commander of a ship and was appointed executive officer of the Portsmouth Navy Yard. Just before Christmas, 1884, he committed suicide at Portsmouth, at the age of just 45.
