Up for sale is a cage from my personal collection. A piece of history at your fingertips. It is a metal Japanned (painted) bird cage with a wooden finial. I believe this was manufactured by The Andrew B. Hendryx Co.c. 1890. Cages didn\'t carry the Hendryx name until about 1910 according to my Hendryx trade catalogs. Antique, unlabeled cages have a \"look\" about them that makes them distinctly Leon, Lindemann, Crown, or Hendryx cages. This cage has multiple parts in common with the cages offered in the Hendryx 1891 trade catalog: punched-metal roof, bird, shell and flower accents, door design, railing design, feeder openings. Picture limitations allow me to offer pictures of the cage only. I will send trade catalog photos and other cage photos for serious inquiries. I cannot guarantee this is a Hendryx. I\'ve asked 4 experts, 2 say \"yes it is\", 2 say \"unsure\". I believe this is a display cage. Common cages, back in the day, did not have the decal work on the bottom like this one does. They were functional. The Andrew B. Hendryx Co. made a big display for the 1876 Centennial as well as other special occasions. This may be one of them.
This antique cage is of a Gothic style with an octagonal pedestal base and 4 arched window-sides. The base railing was designed with a single flower on each corner and birds adorning the peak of each roof line and a wooden finial at the center. There is a swing in the center of the cage. The roof is of a punched-metal design as is the railing. The cage is held to the base with latches. The bottom of the base of the cage is graced with angels and flowers with surprising clarity for its age. (Check out the photos) The door opens/closes easily. The feeder openings are intact. This cage would display beautifully on a mirror. This would display itsarchitecturalcharacter as well as the floral and angel designs on the bottom of the base.
Dating this cage by using the Hendryx trade catalogs puts it in the late 19th century. It\'s been around a long time and has some \"issues\". The wooden finial is loose. Damage to the opening on the roof makes it wobble and not stand up straight. One of the vertical wires on one of the sides is loose at the bottom. Several are bent. Three of the four birds on the roof top are present...one is missing. The latches holding the cage to the base are in a fixed position from age and do not hold. Three of the latches are present, one is missing. This cage cannot be hung. There is damage to one corner and there has been an attempt to repair by a previous owner. The base is uneven. 3 of the flowers are present on the railing and a corner of the railing has damage to it. The floor of the base is rough.
This cage is approx. 20 in. to the top of the finial loop. The tray has a point-to-point diameter of 18 in.
