Beautiful Antique Victorian Hand Carved WHITBY JET Bar Brooch. Excellent Condition. Mourning. Gothic. Gift Box

A beautiful antique Victorian hand carved Whitby Jet bar brooch. The detailed carvingcontrasts beautifully with the smooth sections, which have a lovely sheen. Whitby jet is very brittle and prone to chips, particularly on pieces as old as this. There is a very tiny fleabite to the front, only visible through a loupe (please see last enlarged photo, where it is circled). I didn\'t notice this on first inspection with a loupe ~ this is how difficult it is to spot! There are also a couple of fleabites on the reverse, but these tiny imperfections do not in any way detract from its immense charm ~ the brooch is in Excellent Condition for its age. It has a Victorian hinge and fastens with a simple C clasp.

During this period, black jewellery (and in particular Whitby jet) was the height of fashion, and not just for those in mourning.
