Antiquity in terms of patina meets antiquity interms of the cameo\'s image in this amazinglate 1800s to early 1900s Mt. Vesuvius cameo filigree necklace. The aged natural patina of the metal here issoooo right for the rare cameo with its vintage c. early 1900s image of a smoking Mt. Vesuvius above the Bay of Naples. I adore vintage jewelry that shows its age, and this treasure does just that. The cameo --think of what the cameo all by itself is worth -- is in great condition with no cracks that I can find, and the handcrafted wirework filigree is in good shape with the usual bends from more than 100years of wear. I can see that this filigree portion would have been silver plated over copper because some copper shows through here and there in the filigree. So, the patina is KILLER -- dark oxidation of the silver plating, green oxidation ofthe copper, withglimmersof the copper itself. Rich and GORGEOUS. The necklace portion with original hook clasp also has a nice dark patina, and it seems to be maybe 800 silver or perhaps sterling. (It was common for the chain portion of a necklace to be of a sturdier material than the soft copper filigree.) The 2 faceted purple stones are amethysts or art glass; both were used back in the day. This is about 17\" long. Perfect -- just an inch longer than a choker. I tried this on, and it sits right at the neck. Really pretty. I also wrapped it on my wrist (see final photo), and it would be a gorgeous bracelet if someone simply shortened the chain. These Mt. Vesuvius cameos are precious rarities, and this is a true treasure of a long-gone era.
