The Art Nouveau era, 1890-1910, was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" in French, which translates to \"A Beautiful Time.” This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry.
Memento Mori objects and jewelry were created to remind people of mortality. These objects of adornment, most often rings, are referred to as Memento Mori – a succinct term reminding us of our transience on Earth, and a warning to prepare ourselves for whatever other realm awaits us. This type of item really gained popularity during the 1500s.
Niello is a method of enameling that uses a durable, powdered metal-sulfur alloy used to create a high contrast surface decoration. Powdered niello is inlaid on engraved or etched metal, usually silver, and heated until it melts to fill the engraved lines. As it cools, it blackens and fuses to the metal. The piece is then polished, revealing lines of black etched into the bright silver. This process was popularized in Russia during the Victorian and Art Nouveau era, and adapted by the Thai. In Thai jewelry, the process was reversed; the background of the piece was carved down to create a high relief design, and niello inlay was used to fill in the background. The earliest examples of niello enameling were found on bronze daggers in Greece, circa 1550BC.
Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channels. Chasing is thousands of years old and was very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today.
