Notable Features:This stunning sterling silver brooch was handmade by a talented Hopi artisan in the American Southwest and features a unique geometrical overlay design. Overlay involves a lot of painstaking work, starting with a design which is meticulously cut out of a sheet of silver and then silver soldered onto another silver sheet. The bottom open areas are then textured with a small hammer and tarnished. The design of this brooch shows that remarkable craftsmanship with a continuous top pattern of sharp angles, forming triangular and squares shapes. The contrast between the highly polished sterling silver and the dark patina is quite striking. The corners of the brooch are curved slightly, adding an elegant touch to this piece. The brooch is finished with a sturdy locking \"c\" clasp and can be worn many ways, making this piece very versatile. It would look especially nice as a pendant. This brooch would make a wonderful gift for someone special, or treat for yourself. Don\'t miss your opportunity to own this incredible example of Hopi jewelry.

The History
This beautiful piece was made by a very talented Native American silversmith. It features handcrafted silversmith work throughout. Antique Native American jewelry is very rare to find. This is due to these pieces being made for reservation and personal use before the tourist trade became popular. Very few pieces were made and even less survived to today.
The concept of Pawn, Old Pawn, and Dead Pawn Native American Jewelry came to be in the 1800s. During this time, trading posts had become commonplace for Natives to go and exchange food, tools, and other materials with Colonists at. Essentially, banks would loan the shop owners money which was then invested into loans for Native Americans in exchange for their jewelry. When a loan wasn’t repaid, the item became known as either “Old Pawn” or “Dead Pawn.”
Southwest jewelry from the American Southwest is unique to itself and has a look that has become popular worldwide. Southwest jewelry was originally created by Native American and Mexican artistic influence and has gained popularity throughout the years, becoming a staple of many contemporary designs.
Hopi Jewelry is very hard to find and more commonly it is Navajo and Zuni silver jewelry that is found on the open market. Hopi artistsare distinctly different with beautiful intricate stamp work and symbology mixed in their silver designs.
Overlay is a technique that uses two layers of metal to create a 3-dimensional piece of jewelry. The top layer, usually silver, has a design cut out of it. This cutout piece is placed over a bottom layer of silver and the two pieces are soldered together. The inside of the design is oxidized so that it shows up black underneath the polished silver layer. Hopi silversmiths are considered the masters of the overlay technique, bringing it to popularity in the 194os. Navajo artisans also create beautiful and technically distinctive pieces. Hopi overlay can be differentiated from Navajo inlay because Hopi pieces have an etched texture on the base, whereas Navajo pieces have a smooth base.
