The History
This beautiful piece was made during a period called the Art Nouveau Era! This time was also called \"La Belle Epoque\" in French which translates to \"A Beautiful Time.” This period was in existence from 1890-1914.
The translation fits, as many gorgeous pieces and design were created as a result of this era. The Art Nouveau period was famous for its flowing organic designs, flowing ladies, flowing floral designs, and regal designs.
Guilloché engraving was combined with enameling during the late 19th century by Carl Fabergé, a Russian jeweller best known for the creation of Fabergé eggs. This successful integration of metal and glass appeared soon after Michael Perchin became head-goldmaster for Fabergé in 1886. Under his direction, guilloché engraving became increasingly complex. After firing, each piece was polished by hand using a wooden wheel covered with chamois leather. These techniques were difficult and time-consuming, but Fabergé’s craftsmen made them seem easy.
The trend was soon adopted by other great jewelry houses of the time, including Bolin, Cartier, Chaumet, Boucheron and Tiffany & Co. Jeweled clocks, watch cases, cigarette/cigar cases, picture frames, parasol handles, combs, mirrors, pens, buckles, matching button sets, and compact purses like this piece are just a few of the tempting trinkets made of guilloché enamel that proliferated from 1890 to 1920.
Sapphires have long been prized for both their rarity and beauty. They are considered one of the four precious gemstones along with rubies, diamonds & emeralds. Sapphires have adorned royal jewelry for ages and were reserved for the wealthiest of clients.
Hand held purses were used during the Victorian Era and remained popular until the early 1950’s. There were many uses for these items including coin purses, calling card holders, make up cases, and could hold other miscellaneous items. The purses of a higher variety were made of precious metals such as sterling silver or gold. The more ornate of a purse one carried, the higher one’s status. They were usually around 4-6” in height and had a short chain attached to be wrapped around the wrist. This style of purse is difficult to find these days.Domestic US: All items ship within one business day of receiving payment.
