The History

Thisbeautiful piece was made during a period called the Art Nouveau Era! This timewas also called \"La Belle Epoque\" in French which translates to\"A Beautiful Time\". This period was in existence from 1890-1914.

This wasvery true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. The ArtNouveau period was famous for its flowing organic designs, flowing ladies, flowing floral designs, regal designs.

In thelate 19th century, Carl Fabergé elevated this craft to new heights by marryingguilloché engraving with enameling. This successful integration of metal andglass appeared soon after Michael Perchin became head-goldmaster for Fabergé in1886. Under his direction, guilloché engraving became increasingly complex. After firing, each piece was polished by hand using a wooden wheel covered withchamois leather. These techniques were difficult and time-consuming, butFabergé’s craftsmen made them seem like child’s play.

The trendwas soon adopted by other great jewelry houses of the time, including Bolin,Cartier, Chaumet, Boucheron and Tiffany& Co. Jeweled clocks, watch cases, cigarette cases, cigar cutters, pictureframes, cane heads, parasol handles, hatpins, vanity cases, combs, mirrors, lorgnettes, pens, buckles and matching button sets are just a few of thetempting trinkets in guilloché enamel that proliferated from 1890 to 1920.

Cloisonnéis a form of enamel work that is used on jewelry and to decorate Fabergé eggs, vases, or other such items. A craftsman would have used thin silver or goldstrips or wires to create compartments on the metal object in a certain design.Enamel would have been specially made to fill these compartments while leavingthe metal visible for added design. The enamel could be made into variouscolors and pieces featuring cloisonné usually have more than one color of enamel.

Russiancloisonné from the Tsarist era is highly prized by collectors, especially if itis from the House of Fabergé or Khlebnikov.

Repoussébegan as an ancient metal working technique, involving malleable silver firstformed with a specially created three-dimensional mold and then further refinedby hammering from the reverse side and adding detail to the front. The finished work was intricate, withgrooves, indentation and channeling. It was then carefully polished as aneye-catching treasure.

There is some slight enamel loss as expected with age, please view the pictures.

This large Egg includes beautiful hand painted Cloisonne and Guilloche enamel work throughout the whole of the egg. The raised and applied silver patterns include Pansies and Butterflies! The egg includes a ribbon tied on the top to use as an ornament as well. It also includes a stand to be displayed anywhere you like. The stand has beautiful floral patterns throughout the feet of the stand.

This egg would have been given as a gift and made to mimic the Russian Wedding Eggs that were very popular during this time period. Very few Chinese Export Wedding Eggs were made and even less have survived.
