Antique Wood Barrel Cylinder Desk From A Civil War Era Ship 1800s To 1860s?:
Very nice, functional nautical hard wood antique barrel cylinder desk. Estate sale find! The elderly gentleman I got this from said it belonged to his grandfather and that the desk came from a Civil War era wooden ship. I have no providence to support that information, only an oral history. The inside drawer pull hardware look like whale tails and they are affixed with brass pins. The wood is finished with wax, and there are decades of wax build up on the whale tail pulls. The wood has a “sweet” smell to it, perhaps from the wax. Everything on the desk functions nicely and easily. The cylinder rolls up and down just fine. All of the inner compartments open easily, and the pull-out writing area also works well. All of the wood pieces are solid wood, even the thin back pieces, no plywood or veneers. The mortars and tenons used are tight and clean. The grain and hardness looks like walnut or oak, but I am not certain and I am not an expert. I could find no makers marks on this piece, it appears to have been hand made. Some more modern hardware has been added such as magnetic door holds. Please look at photos and ask questions.
