Galalith (milk stone) is a registered trade mark, patented in the 1890\'s in Bavaria. Mostly produce in Europeduring the first part of the 20e century, this semi-synthetic plastic (Casein is the generic name), is made fromskimmed milk curdled with rennet. Cured by long immersion in formaldehyde, it became a useful thermosettingmaterial, which can be moulded in beautiful patterns. It\'s color doesn\'t change over time. The colors you canfind are mostly plain opaque colors, sometimes with marbling or translucency. Galalith pieces are machined,sanded or handfinished and therefore there should be no marks left on them (in opposition to cheap massproduced plastics), so all pieces are seamless and this material belonging to the plastic family such as Bakelite,or Celluloid or Lucite is considered to be a top quality chunky plastic. Galalith is impossible to test like genuineAmerican Bakelite because the chemical composition is : milk protein. hardened with formaldehyde.
