Ancient Medieval \"Solar\" or \"Sun\" Cross pendant of a unique, rare two-sided artistic design featuring a Sun Cross on the obverse, and an empty circle (likely, a symbol of the Moon) on the reverse. Handmade from bronze or similar brass-like copper alloy, inlaid with yellow enamel darkened due to age. Good antique condition, lightly bent and worn out. Double-sided, the enamel is well preserved on both sides. Beautiful, original dark green- to brown patina.
Exact age unknown, could have been made in the Medieval period or earlier. A cautious approach would date the cross as an artifact from 9th - 11th centuries.The style of the pendant is similar to the Celtic \"Sun\" (Solar) Cross, or Northern European/Viking, or Kievan Russia (Rus) cross pendants.
Similar crosses are often described as \"Viking\" crosses. Such crosses traveled across Europe during the Viking Age, a period of Nordic military, mercantile and demographic expansion reaching the Byzantine Empire, France, Italy, Baltic nations and Ancient Russia (Rus).The obverse of the cross has a centerpiece bearing a typical image of a Solar cross, a cross surrounded by a circle. The reverse has a centerpiece with an image of a smaller, empty circle centered inside, probably a symbolic depiction of the full Moon.
