A wonderful, small, antique tin, tole ware style document box, which dates to approx. the mid 1800\'s. It measures 4.2\" across x just under 3\" high x just under 3\" deep. There is a dome topped lid which is attached to the bottom by 2 soldered hinges on the upper back. This box was handmade, likely in New England. It is one of several that have been in our family for many generations. It was probably used as a cash/ receipt box for a business run by many generations of our family over the years. There is a round bail handle on the top center- it measures approx. 1\" in diameter. It has a hasp closure- both parts are complete & intact, & function perfectly well. It retains some of it\'s original paint- what appears to be a stenciled design of leaves running across the front top with a mustard background & a deep green for the leaves. There is a festoon style design near the top of each side, showing only mustard colored paint. It is fairly intact on the right side, but you can only see traces of it on the left side. It looks as though there may have been some paint on the very top of each side of the lid, but there is now only what I call a \" shadow \" of what was likely once painted. Most of the box is in very good condition for it\'s age. There is some superficial rust, but nothing falling apart or about to cave in. There is really only one flaw on this box- that is a crack at the top left corner of the lid. It starts right at the front of the lid & goes back approx. 0.6\". It is small & narrow- can be seen in photo\'s # 6 ( a little bit ) & # 9-( a lot-very visible ). The split isn\'t too bad, doesn\'t affect the use of the box, & can be gently pushed into place, where it usually stays quite well. We made sure to make it visible in photo\'s, so you know it\'s there. There is some general \" crustiness \" on it- it really looks worse in the photo\'s than it looks to the eye. The domed top, the back & the sides are fairly smooth, without too much roughness. Most of the \" crusties \" appear on the front - especially toward the bottom, & again, they look worse in the photo\'s than to the naked eye. Overall, this is a nice small antique dome topped document box, with original paint, & in good antique condition.
