This is antique vintage photo postcard dated around early 1900s is a photo of the Norwich Castle and Cattle market. The postcard is addressed to my deceased 89 year old stepfather\'s mother when she was young.
This has great history! The dignified square castle dominates the city from its prehistoric mound. In 1345 it became the county goal, and for the most part was not to play a great role in the county\'s history. It now houses a splendid museum. Huge sheep markets were held in the market place, and the farmers and buyers refreshed themselves in the Woolpack, a convenient public house across the road from the castle.Here we see Norwich Castle rising above the bustle of the sheep market. A motte and bailey castle, one of the earliest in England, was erected here soon after the Norman Conquest, for at that time Norwich was an important town and a major port. A stone keep was built by Henry I, which was subsequently much altered and rebuilt.The Cattle Market stands next to the old Norman castle. This is where the livestock trade for the area was conducted, although recently, after many years as nothing more than a car park, the site was excavated for its archaeological value, and then turned into a multi-story underground shopping precinct called the Castle Mall.The Tombland Fair provides the activity in this picture of Norwich Castle. At the time of the Conquest, Norwich was both an important town and a major port. Control was quickly established with the erection of one of the earliest motte and bailey castles in England.
