The company was founded in 1841 by Anton Michelsen (1809-1877). The genus derived from Hasmark, Funen, can be traced back to the 17th century and for generations driven wrought craftsmanship. Anton Michelsen traveled after in 1828 have been prepared apprenticeship as a goldsmith in Odense in 1830 to Copenhagen, where he pursued further education at various workshops including in Dyrkoph and hofguldsmed J. B. Dalhoff and sought Arts Academy, where he came under the influence of GF Hetsch. In 1836 he went on a long trip abroad and worked in contemporary finest workshops in Germany and mainly in Paris (Wagner), after which he in 1841 returned to Copenhagen and opened his own workshop in Gothersgade. Royal Family showed him from the outset warm interest. Christian VIII let Anton Michelsen perform the Danish guilds, and the company has since then led predicate of Royal court and order jewelers. Already in 1855 exhibited Anton Michelsen as the only Danish goldsmith at the First World Exhibition in Paris, and since then the company with honor participated in most international exhibitions and fairs.


By Anton Michelsen\'s death in 1877 was taken over the business by his son Carl Michelsen (1853-1921), who was trained as a lawyer and businessman. He imposed a number of contemporary artists as her employees, including Arnold Krog, Harald Slott-Møller, Hans Tegner, Martin Nyrop and primarily Thorvald. Carl Michelsen was effective for the industry and for a time President of Industry and Crafts Museum\'s first board.


In 1914 joined his son, Captain Paul Ulrich Michelsen (1881-1957), as co-owner of the company. Trained mercantile in Landmandsbanken and craft, he took over at Carl Michel\'s death in 1921 the management of the business. Artists like Svend Hammershøi, Ib Lunding, Olaf Stæhr-Nielsen, Palle Suenson, Arne Bang oa drawing data supplied to the company. Most important for the development was probably the work to the years after 1925 were performed in the workshop by Professor Kay Fisker\'s drawings. Later, the Ole Hagen, Erik Herløw and Edvard Kindt-Larsen their mark on the development. Apart silversmith also guldsmedien and enamel workshop asserted themselves over the years by distinctive working. At its 100th anniversary in 1941, the holder Paul Ulrich Michelsen appointed Commander of the Order of Dannebrog, and the Danish Museum of Art organized a retrospective exhibition. At the same circulated book: A. Michelsen and Danish Silversmith Art, written by Ole Wanscher and Erik Lassen. In January 1940 Mr Michel\'s son, master Jørgen Michelsen (b. 1912), trained as an art historian and as a silversmith at the Technical School and abroad, been with the company and in 1943 he was admitted as partner. In 1946 established AB A. Michelsen, Stockholm, as a subsidiary.


In 1985, Royal Copenhagen, Holmegaard Glassworks, A. Michelsen and Georg Jensen fused to Royal Copenhagen.


Anton Michelsen is one of the \'greats\' of modernist Danish Design with Georg Jensen, Just Andersen, Arne Johansen, Hans Hansen and Bernhard Hertz to name the few.


Fun Fact: Georg Jensen was apprenticed at Anton Michelsen at the end of the 19th century
