Being offered is an exceedingly rare and monumental pair of sterling silver seven light candelabras designed and signed (circa 1950s) by Taxco, Mexico modernist silver Maestro Antonio Pineda (1919-2009). Each measuring 14 1/2 inches tall and 13 1/2 inches in diameter and weighing 5 1/2 lbs. Antonio often incorporated elements of nature in his silver creations as seen throughout this exceptionally strong design. A central hexagonal column supporting 6 curled vines accented with subtle leaves is topped with the seventh candle holder. The sculptural base is comprised of 6 curled waves, a design feature that is repeated beneath the central bobeche at the top. Each candelabra is signed on the bottom of the base with his signature crown hallmark. Identical in design, one candelabra is marked 930 for sterling silver content and one is marked 925 indicating that they were in all likelihood hand constructed on different dates. Antonio used 925, 930 and 970 silver purity in his silver designs. Both are hallmarked with eagle #17.
Known for his love of pure form Antonio is considered to be one of the most innovative modernist designers of the 20th century. Elements of this candelabra pair can be seen in his famous \"wave\" necklace and bracelet designed around the same period. Antonio\'s works have been exhibited by museums around the world most recently in Silver Seduction the Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles.
