WELCOMETO SALLY’S DIARIES:

Allof the items in this lot belonged to Thomas Sheridan Carey of LosAngeles California. Carey was a well know physician and surgeon inLA. He was born in 1893, married to Helen and they had a son ThomasA. Carey. Dr. Carey died in 1969.

Thereare too many pieces to count in this lot but I would say there areover 200. They range anywhere from handwritten letters to his sonduring the 1940’s to receipts, legal documents, business expensepapers, manuscripts from when his first home was built and more. Theyall came in folders but the folders were very badly water damaged andI had to throw them away so I did put each group in their own newfolders as I found them as many of them were marked. Because of thatwater damage some of the material itself is damaged on the edges orcorners. Not all of it and most is in good shape. Some were alsoattached together with paperclips which rusted. I’ve cleaned thepieces best I can.

Iwrote the titles on the new folders as they were written. Thosetitles and contents include:

1)Real Estate Desert Lucerne Valley 9-29-51 Commander G. V. Wickware.(Godfrey V. Wickware. I think this folder has to do with investing inland in San Bernardino County.)

2)Los Angeles County Medical Association.

3)Tom’s (Jr.) Trip to Europe 1948. Letters, Wires and Pictures. (Thiscontains several letters back home to his folks in Europe and othertravel ephemera)

4)Correspondence 1956. Copies of Articles (Letters from other medicalprofessionals, etc.)

5)No title on this one but had a lot of “Post Graduate” materialinside.

6)Garage Door Hardware Frantz “Over the Top Set.” #781. 634 No.June St. Installed Jan. 1942.

7)1945 Paid House Bills. Tom’s Room Gar. Roof. (Some of these arereceipts from Beverly Hills Shops).

8)Int. Decorating 1947-1948. Bob Brown Agreement. Bills, Memos, Seaboxfor all bills and receipts.

9)Handcock Park Property Owner’s Association. A. J. Copp Jr. 401Muirfield Rd. 1948. Seafiel, Findel, Lot 15 TR 9269.

10)Tom’s (Jr.) Letters/Stanford.

11)Loan 48865 Security 1st National Bank. 634 No. June St.Legal Description Lot 3. Tract 9269. Extension Agreement.

Iwant to focus on two of the folders; Folder # 11 had quite a fewpapers and three photos (taken at different times) of the house thatDr. Carey lived in which was designed and built for him by veryfamous Beverly Hills architect by the name of John P. Pedersen. Inthis group are quite a few papers from different contractors, somebeing also addressed to Pedersen. And to my great surprise, theagreement between Dr. Carey and Pedersen is in this lot along withboth of their signatures.

Lookup Pedersen on the web and you’ll see some of the wealthy Hollywoodhomes he built. Pedersen was born in Norway in 1888, Pedersen ownedan architectural firm in Beverly Hills focusing on residentialdesign. He designed homes for many of the rich and famous of his era.Pedersen also designed a number of houses in the San Joaquin Valley, including the Barnett house on Elm Street in Bakersfield. DuringWorld War Two, he worked with the US Maritime Commission on thedesign of concrete ships.

Iactually found the house itself on the web and it’s amazingcomparing the photos that came with this lot and the photos of thehouse now. Still a fabulous house. I found the following article onthe web concerning the house itself……

“ArchitectJohn P. Pedersen designed the Spanish Colonial Revival style housefor Dr. Thomas Sheridan Carey in 1929. He lived in the house with hiswife Helene and their son Thomas A. Carey. The 4-bedroom, 4-bath homein 3175 sq. ft. is currently (March 2017) on the market listed forsale for $2,699,000 and described in the listing as \"EnchantingHancock Park Spanish Colonial Revival by architect John P. Pedersen.Walk through a gated courtyard, past stucco archways to enter atimeless home filled with warmth and romance. Multiple French doorsin the living room and dining room open up to the courtyard for easyindoor/outdoor living. Spacious kitchen w/ butler\'s pantry andattached breakfast room w/ the Juliet balcony to let the breeze flowin. Upstairs master suite includes private balcony and attachedsitting room. Two additional spacious bedrooms upstairs with Jack &Jill bath. Downstairs boasts 4th bedroom converted to office w/attached bath and den w/ built-in shelving and attached bath. Rooftopterrace above garage overlooks impeccably landscaped yard. Stunningarchitectural details include coffered ceiling, period lighting, wrought iron accents, mahogany doors and antique hardware. The CareyHouse is located at 634 North June Street in the historic HancockPark neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.”

Howwonderful is that especially since all the papers in this particularfolder have to do with the house when it was first built.

Finallyfolder #10. There are 82 letters and many of them are several pagesin length and all are between father and son with our author beingTom Sr. The first letter begins on September 23rd, 1946and the last letter on April 11th, 1949. I was going totry and read them all but I just don’t have time, especially sincethis description is already too long but I did read a few to gathersome quotes from, as follows……

“October3rd, 1946.

DearestTom, Before going out on some errands, I shall incorporate a briefnote with the Foreign letter which is enclosed and which arrivedtoday. This morning at 9:20 A.M. one of your comrades from the MarineCorps called, Henry Berk. He was in L.A. for the day and had a ticketon the night train tonight for S.F. He appeared anxious to get intocommunication with you. I gave him your address. We invited him tocall and for a meal also but his time did not permit. His addressis….(He then lists Henry’s address)…..Love Pop.”

“April28th, 47’

DearestTom, Your letter of the 25th arrived this morning and gaveus a lift. I know you will solve your problem in due course. I wouldsuggest that since you have a schedule to complete, the sooner youaccomplish it the better for you. So far as females are concerned, remember they are fickle to say the least and I cannot see you in anykind of a trailer arrangement notwithstanding the lady’s charms. There is time for that. I suppose there are so many attractive girlson the campus that one is confused by the whole selection……I amtaking my health problems as they come as any prudent surgeon woulddo and have things arranged should a crisis develop over night. Inorder to keep my mind occupied I sent in 2 jingles on the Bob Hopecontest for a try at a Chevrolet……Love Pop.”

Thereis so much more to these letters and this archive. Again, please keepthe condition in mind of several of these pieces. As stated abovemost look good and it’s mainly where many of them were stapled orpaper clipped together. The letters, surprisingly, are in real goodshape. All in all a fabulous historical Los Angeles group.
