About the Manufacturer: Lazarus Posen Witwe was uniqueamong 19th- and 20th-century German silver manufacturers as its owner andprincipal director was a Jewish woman. The firm was founded in Frankfurt on theMain in 1869 by Brendina Wetzlar, the widow of Lazarus Jacob Posen, asilversmith and retailer of Polish descent. Under the widow Posen’sstewardship, the firm became the largest supplier of Judaica in the late 19thcentury. Her son Jacob L. Posen joined the firm by 1880, and by 1900, thecompany’s large staff of chasers and engravers were producing some of thefinest silver in the country. They received a royal warrant in 1903 and openeda second shop in Berlin. The firm followed all the latest continental trends such as Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil in German) styles. In the 20thcentury the firm was under the direction of Brendina’s grandsons Jakob, Hermannand Moritz Posen. Tragically, the company was looted and forced to close in November 1938 following Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass), the pogram against Jews throughout Nazi Germany.Articles by Posen Witwe are today held in both the FrankfurtHistorical Museum and the Frankfurt Jewish Museum.
