Here is a very delicate and really well designed wall hanging, at first we thought this was made of strips of bamboo shoot but we see it is actually Asian - India made from dried Palm leaves, it really is good.
It has a purple coloured material on the back and around the edge, with 2 strings and wool tassels at the top and two tassels at the bottom corners.
It is not antique but vintage by the look of the wool and material.
It then has 12 strips of palm leaf - horizontal, these are fine engraved and pierced - fretted openwork design with exotic birds - foliage, a large central design of 5 figures, this we think is known as Patachitra but that is normally done on material, whereas this is on palm leaf.
As well as that it has 14 circular panels, you will see these have figures engraved on them, the bottom halves are on a differant piece and these can be folded UP to reveal another image, using the top half of the figure and the bottom half of the hidden picture, these are lovers, as well as that the top folds DOWN and another picture or wording is found in here as well, so it has 28 hidden pictures.
It is all folding, the strips are in a concertina style, really well made.
Just need to mention one of the halves of the folding parts at the bottom, 3rd one along has a crack in it...as too does the first one, bottom left hand corner.
It is 18 inch wide x 16 inch long, the horizontal strips are approx 1 and a quarter inch wide, the circular stitch hinged hidden windows are just over 2 inch dia.
