Dated between 1890-1900.
Gorgeous!The figures Moissonneur (Male) 7 3/16\" tall - 1 lb. 2.1 oz (514gm)Moissonneuse (Female) 6 1/2\" tall - 1 lb. 1.7 oz (500gm)Combined weight of 2 lbs. 3.7 (1014gm)Both bases are 2 5/8\" in diameter. The pair are both signed on the base Aug. Moreau (Auguste Moreau). Antique pair of French spelter figures.
The spelter figures are the harvesters . Unusual in size this is indeed a rare pair.
The bases are dark red hand carved Italian marble and bear the plaque of the female harvester, Moissonneuse (English; Combine) and the male harvester, Moissonneur (English; Reaper) by Auguste Moreau. The pair are in fabulous condition with only slight loss to the finish. The bottoms can easily be refinished with new, green felt. We choose to leave them in their original state as purchased by us.
Thank you for your consideration. Spelter, while sometimes used merely as a synonym for zinc, is often used to identify a zinc alloy. In this sense it might be an alloy of equal parts copper and zinc, i.e. a brass, used for hard soldering and brazing, or as an alloy, containing lead, that is used instead of bronze.
