Antique Austro-Hungarian snuff box

A fine snuff box with original hand painted portrait panel albeit with some damage

Increasingly difficult to source, these types of snuff boxes are a rarity

Hallmarked to side and inner lip for Austria, assay mark: Pest(Budapest), maker Krauz Testverek

Heavily decorated with extensive engraving to all sides whilst the top is a scene of open work set with a miniature painting

I cannot get into the lid to access the painting as it is a little smeared with old polish and some dirt marks. But one can eaily see the image of a woman and her children - an endearing sight to behold.

A premier maker whose work has been presented at some of the finest sale houses in the world, Krauz Testverek of Budapest is highly regarded for his snuff boxes and highly detailed finishes.

This piece bears full hallmarks for his name and assay, alongside outstanding engraving to all surfaces with complex open work to lid.

Found within the lid is an original hand painted portrait of a Victorian woman with her two children, this painting bearing some damage(under glass) but is still visible under the layers of polish and old grime. If able to be access I am sure this would clean away perfectly but I am highly reluctant to attempt such a rescue!

Measuring 3.5\" wide and weighing 124gms this box is a beautiful example by one of Europe\'s finest silversmiths.

I would have to place this piece as in quite good condition, apart from the discoloration to portrait under the glass.
