This is the most extraordinary squash blossom we have ever seen or had the pleasure of owning. This is due to the fact that has a matching choker necklace that can be worn with it. When you see the set worn - it\'s so beautifulit will give you goose bumps! The set is elegant, one of a kind, museum quality, stunning...and I could go on. The coral is authentic gem quality Mediterranean blood red coral, a rarity these days. Truly a masterpiece.

It was created by one of the Navajo silversmiths from Sacred Mountain Smiths during the 1970\'s. They were located in Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona but are no longer in business. We purchased many of their items from the estate of the owner.

About Mediterranean Red Coral

Precious or gemstone quality coral is considered to be themost desirable type of coral for jewelry. Most coral used in high qualityjewelry are from the varieties of Corallium rubrum, a very specific pink to redcolored species of the coral genus.

In the trade, Corallium rubrum is sometimes referred to as\'noble coral\', Native Americans call it “red gold”. Natural coral is typically untreated.

Though precious coral is found in locations all around the world,Torre del Greco (near Naples, Italy) has been the top coral trading center forover 200 years, processing nearly 75% of the entire world\'s supply of coral.Most of the precious coral available today is harvested from the westernMediterranean Sea, especially in Sardinia.

There are a variety of other materials used to imitate Mediterraneancoral, such bamboo coral which is naturally white but dyed red. Bamboo coral is a much cheaperalternative. Imitation coral can be madefrom glass, bone, conch shell and plastic.

Care of Gem Quality Coral

According to Gemselect…”To reduce color loss, avoid exposingyour gem to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time and avoid any extremetemperature fluctuations. Do not clean your coral with any harsh householdcleaners, such as bleach or acid, and avoid spraying perfumes or hairspraywhile wearing your coral gems or jewelry.

You can wipe down precious coral using a soft cloth and amild soap or detergent if needed. Be sure to rinse well using warm toroom-temperature water to remove soapy residue. Because precious coral is muchsofter than quartz, simply wiping dust off can eventually lead to reducedpolish. To prevent scratches avoid wearing other gems in close contact withyour coral jewelry. Always remove jewelry before exercising, playing sports orperforming any household chores. When storing your coral gemstones, wrap themindividually using a soft cloth and store them away from other gems. Ifpossible, place them inside a fabric-lined jewelry box for extra protection.”
