Awe-Inspiring Matched Pair of 4-Arm 1870s Eastlake Gas Chandeliers w/ Shades:
$10000.00

I must start by sayingthat I can’t believe I am letting these go… If any fixtures evercaptured my heart and imagination, it was this remarkable pair of 1870sgasoliers. Like rebellious celebrity love twins of a sneering punk rock dad anda leather-draped haute couture mom, these chandeliers boldly defy bothexpectation and formal banality. I love them.

But alas, I am moving, and they long to hang in a new home where their charm and character can befully displayed and appreciated again. High ceilings will help.

STYLE
Dating from the U.S.centennial period and stylistically falling between the earlier Neo-Grec andlater Aesthetic Movement trends, these Anglo-Gothic fixtures boldly display acertain visual flair that is undeniable - and too cool.

Everyone sees somethingdifferent in remnants of the past, and what I see in these High Victorian showstoppers is the way the angular and finely incised black spelter arms combinewith the fantastical abstracted gilt brass accent elements to produce aboundary-pushing aggressiveness and stunningly sophisticated silhouette thatreminds me how cutting edge and hip Gilded Age design could be.

CONDITION
These siblings have notsurvived almost 140 years without a few insults and injuries over thedecades. For the most part, the fixtures are original – even in theircanopies, a rare find. Finish is original, with traces of gilt remainingin the incised areas, Theblack paint has been “freshened” inplaces. Gilt brass decorative elements retain much of their originalfinish and bright shine, but are naturally spotty and showing patina in places.

Arms were somewhat loosefrom age, abuse, and poor restoration, and they have been reinforced withadditional screws in areas that are not visible from below. At one time, two gas arms on each were altered for electric sockets, and the piping, gasvalves and keys in those arms were lost. Lost wax reproduction keys have beenexpertly cast from the remaining originals, and finished to match – virtuallyindistinguishable.

Lastly, when originallypurchased, all of the scores of pointed brass elements on the body and canopyspinnings had been bent over to “de-pointify” the rings – these were neatlybent back into place with no real damage done, but I should say it happened.

SHADES
2-5/8\" fitter shadesare frosted glass reproductions with hand-cut Greek Key bands, on new authenticstamped brass 2-5/8” shadeholders. Maker is unknown, though it has beenspeculated that it could be Cassidy & Son of New York.

Even with the unknownsand apologies above, the fixtures remain a remarkable set with a high level ofintegrity, and their minor signs of age and loss do not distract in any wayfrom their power or presence when hanging in place. Matched pairs of thisage, caliber and quality simply don’t come along very often. Don’t miss out.
