The bridge to the eyeglasses I am selling here, is the famous \"saddle bridge\" or \"con cave\" style bridge. John Lennon wore both and these do not leave such a pronounced mark on the nose when removed from the face like the con vex style, John Lennon is wearing in the 2nd photo I have here of him. These are stamped with the Shur -ON logo of the era, signed Shur-ON. All Windsor eyeglasses stamped with the Shur-ON logo are made of 1/10th 12K Gold. Make no mistakes folks, these are 100% authentic...Measurements:
The frames measure 4 1/2 inches from hinged edge to hinged edge. The rims are 38MM, perfectly round and look, except for the bridge in 1st photo of him. They are the same size as John Lennon is wearing in both of my photos. The bridge is set at 20MM and can be adjusted to as small as 18 or as wide as 24MM but only by a professional or I\'d be more than happy to widen them or thin them for you. The temple stems are 6 inches in total length and will fit most small or thin men and women. They will not likely work for someone who is obese. I do not accept refunds for stems or frames that are too large or small but I do have some limited stock on stems if you happen to break one..... I encourage you to check with me first, before going somewhere else, as I can often save you a chunk of change on parts and I encourage you to keep my contact information on file in case something goes wrong. The frames are made of 1/10th yellow gold filled. Gold filled is a heavy bonding of solid gold and in this case over brass, copper or coin silver ( 90% pure silver ). The 1/10th means that the total weight of the gold used to make these must weigh at least 10% of the entire weight of the metal. Many folks have found that these often produce much more gold in scrap than what is reported or stamped on the back of the bridge because the gold was applied by hand, much the same way thread is spooled onto the eyes of a fishing pole. So scrappers will buy these in any kind of condition. I\'ve seen yields of gold over 15%. They were manufactured in the year 1885. I know this by studying the bridge and exactly where it is attached.The Fame:
According to Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon, John Lennon owned over 40 pairs of these iconic \"steampunk styled\" eyeglasses with both the con vex and con cave style bridges. The Eyeglasses Warehouse of Waterville Maine was granted an exclusive phone interview with Yoko and Sean and I\'ve had the privilege of listening to the entire conversation and it certainly clears the clouds about exactly what the man wore. These frames were also made famous and were worn by Teddy Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Ghandi, Groucho Marks and even David Letterman, Whoopee Goldberg, Sting and Ozzy Osbourne wear these same frames. Everyone felt John Lennon was trying to make a fashion statement when he first started wearing these late in the year 1966 but the truth is, he fancied the way the curled, cabled stems wrap around his face and will not fall off or even shift. He was \"totally hooked\"... They\'re highly sought after by both avid Beatles collectors and antique eyeglass dealers, musicians, motorcycle and horse riders world wide and I love them for fishing and picking weeds in the garden. When they are as exquisite as these, they can command a much higher value as well. These eyeglasses have been completely professionally sterilized, cleaned and polished 100% and that\'s very important with these much older, iconic frames and is almost mandatory when installing new lenses. The lenses were also removed by me to completely to sterilize, clean and polish the bezels as well and are prescription lenses. They also tend to make heads turn and I\'m often asked about them when I\'m wearing mine. They\'re awesome folks and look great on both female or male adults and are also the exact same used in the Harry Potter trilogies, however Harry\'s were covered with an era specific, special plastic called \"Zylonite\" or just plain \"Zylo\". I do not encourage anyone to attempt to remove any Zylo, that may be covering the rims, as often the gold rims are dependent on that Zylo for stability. Zylo ( organic plastic )is /was made from the Yucca ( gum tree ) tree sap found in Australia and Indonesia. The Eyeglass case:
I can\'t say enough about the eyeglass case. It\'s a genuine Farrington signed case. The printing of Dr. L.F. Mentzer is guilded ( made with real gold ). Farrington manufactured some of the finest vintage jewelry cases and boxes in the world. This case has what has long been dubbed \"The Spider Web Design\", which originally was not intended by Farrington. Originally it was a \"Net or Netting Design\".
