A gem of early open hearth fireplace cookware, this example is exquisite in form and design and dates from the mid to late 18th century, circa 1750-1780.

Though this design is commonly referenced as a “Scottish Broiler” the formation was common across the United Kingdom, with influences in design carried over to America at the time the Colonial period.

The form is referenced in numerous volumes on period wrought iron, see “The Sorber Collection” by Don Plummer for an almost identical example.

A hearth broiler such as this was used at the foot of an open fireplace. A piece of meart, or a fowl would have been placed against the platform face. The back standing leg would have allowed the piece to angle against the flames of the heat and allow for direct cooking.

This example features some great ironwork in the platform of the design including a center curled formation beneath two waved linear designs.

The construction of this broiler is a superb representation of colonial era metalworking. The blacksmith who produced the piece took careful effort to forge separate elements which are pinned into the final product design.

Please take a moment to click on the photographs and you\'ll find you can produce enlargements that help showcase the superb signs of period construction.

Overall the broiler is in very good+ condition, there is some pitting over the piece from age (as one would expect from over 200 years of age and exposure to a hearth) but still solid and sound.

Stands approximately 10 1/4" and 10 1/8" across the face of the piece.

A truly rare piece of early hearth cookware, and one of the finest we\'ve come across. This piece is surely a prized center point to any iron collection or display at a period hearth or country home.
