BaltimoreSilversmiths Manufacturing Co. - primarily a maker of high quality Baltimorestyle repousse flatware and holloware - was only in business from 1903 until1905. The company was founded in 1903 inBaltimore by Frank M. Schofield; in 1905 it changed its name toHeer-Schofield. It became Frank M.Schofield Co. in 1928 and Schofield Co., Inc., about 1930. The company was bought in 1965 by Baltimorearea jewelers Oscar Caplan & Sons and then by Stieff Co in 1967.

FrankSchofield’s great, great grandfather John Schofield was a silversmith in Londonfrom 1740 to 1772. In 1871, Frank’sparents Allen and Ann Schofield came to the United States from England andsettled in Providence, RI, where Frank was born in 1873. Frank Schofield apprenticed with and workedat Gorham for 8 years before branching out on his own. He arrived in Baltimore in June 1899.

Quoting from Schofield’s 1929 illustrated catalog:“Behind each piece of Schofield tableware is more than half a century ofpainstaking craftsmanship - 58 years devoted to the making of fine silver. Truevalue, full weight, master workmanship - the Schofield mark is an evidence ofthese qualities - the best that skill and sincerity of purpose can produce.” Although pattern 2200 was introduced inSchofield’s early years (1903-1905), its enduring beauty kept it in Schofield’sdesign inventory at least until 1929. Pattern 2200 is illustrated in the1929 catalog as an after dinner coffee set consisting of a coffee pot, acreamer, and a sugar. Offered for salehere are just the creamer and sugar.

Bothsugar and creamer are marked with Baltimore Silversmith’s trio of marks;“2200”; and “STERLING.” The trio of marksconsist of “B” in a diamond; a lion in a circle; and “S” in a diamond. The B (lion) S mark was Schofield’s earliest mark, used from 1903 until 1905 byBaltimore Silversmiths. In 1905, when Schofield joined with Heer, the “B” was changed to an “H” to stand for Heer-Schofield. Often the lion mark is very light in thestamping, and in many examples of sterling seen today wear and polishing haveresulted in just a Diamond, Circle, Diamond instead of the distinctive Schofieldor Baltimore Silversmiths mark.

The sugar and creamer are beautifully engraved with a stylized monogram whichappears to be “RL”. Thepieces are in very good estate condition, although withthe patina of old tarnish and fine scratches to be expected with age and use. The set’s price reflects its condition. This creamer and sugar will make a lovely additionto any silver collection.

Theset combined weighs approximately 8.475 troy ounces. The creamer weighs 3.975 troy ounces; thesugar weighs 4.50 troy ounces. Thecreamer is roughly 4.5” high by 5.25” by 2.50”.The sugar is 4.75” tall to the top of the handle and 3.5” wide handle tohandle. Its bowl is roughly 3.125” in diameter.
