M1918 (Modified) BAR Rifleman Belt… Strong Maker Mark LONG 4-18 (rightpouch side)… LONG 5-18 (connector belt)… Fair marking for left pouch panel (A.M. 23…???)… Great mix of colors (left pouch panel different from right pouchpanel; added pouch different color and fabric style to other pouches) which isvery typical of the mass produced use-what-you-have-available technique…Unissued…This BAR belt isfor the advanced collector, not for the weekend reenactor...!!! BEAUTIFUL and RARE EXAMPLE of a M1918(modified) BAR Belt…!!!

M1918 (Modified) BAR Rifleman Belt…In Post-WWI, almost all of the M1918 BAR belts were modified by removing themetal cup/leather back on the right side pouch panel (used in WWI for the ‘walking’method of firing the BAR with the butt end secured in the cup to walk and firethe weapon) and replacing this cup/back with an additional two-magazine BAR pouchin the middle of the right panel. This allowed for an additional two BAR 20-rd magsof ammunition to be carried by a BAR rifleman, bringing the total magazinenumber up from 8 in 4 BAR mag pouches to 10 in 5 pouches (plus 2 .45 calmagazines in the two-mag pouch on the right panel)… This example has it all…Unissued with STRONG maker markings for the right pouch side (LONG 4-18), connectorbelt (LONG 5-18), fair marking for left pouch panel (A. M. 23…???), and thenotation ‘9’ in the middle of the back of the right pouch panel to let theseamstress know where the cup/leather back was to be removed and the middle BARpouch was to be added… Great mix of colors (left pouch panel different fromright pouch panel; added pouch different color and fabric style to otherpouches) which is very typical of the mass produced use-what-you-have-availabletechnique… Most of these M1918(modified) BAR belts were moved from US Armystock to USMC/USN stock with the transition to the issue of Model 1937personal field gearequipment within the US Army. You will see many pictures of Marinesin the PTO equipped with this belt used throughout WWII, most with suspendersdue to the heavy loadout of this belt (10 mags BAR, 2 mags .45, M1911 .45pistol & holster, Kabar knife and scabbard, first aid pouch and junglefirst aid pouch, the BAR spares/tools and pouch, and 2 canteens)… This type ofBAR belt would have been used from the Banana Wars through Vietnam… An excellentexample that would highlight anyone’s collection (as it has in my collection for 20+ years)…
