Batakis a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups predominantly found in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The term is used to include the Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Toba, Angkola, and Mandailingwhich are related groups with distinct languages and customs (adat).

PrehistoryA traditional Toba Batak house

Linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that Austronesianspeakers first reached Sumatra from Taiwanand the Philippinesthrough Borneoand/or Javaabout 2,500 years ago, and the Batak probably descended from these settlers. While the archaeology of southern Sumatra testifies to the existence of neolithic settlers, it seems that the northern part of Sumatra was settled by agriculturalists at a considerably later stage.

Although the Batak are often considered to be isolated peoples thanks to their location inland, away from the influence of seafaring European colonials, there is evidence that they have been involved in trade with other neighbouring kingdoms for a millennium or more.

Singais an apotropaicfigure from the mythology of the Batakpeople of North Sumatra, Indonesia. The singa represents a benevolent and protective power. The singa is described as \"part human, part water buffalo, and part crocodile or lizard\". It is variedly represented, but always has an elongated face, with big bulging eyes, a well-defined nose, and long spiralling beard. It is often represented only with its head, but sometimes it may also be represented full body. Other figures - such as other protective deity or ancestral figures - may also be represented standing or sitting on top of the head of the singa.
The word \'Singa\' has its root in Sanskrit and literally means \'lion\'. However, in Batak art and cosmology, the Singa is a composite mythological animal representing the totemic serpent spirit and serves as mount for the venerated ancestors, thereby forming a link between the underworld of the spirits and the upperworld of the gods - via the realm of men residingin the middle world.

An architectural ornament from the gable end of a traditional Batak house, in the form of “singa”. Although the word means “lion”, singa resemble no living creature. The “singa” motif is thematic to Batak decoration, particularly among the Toba Batak where it is found on houses, domestic utensils, wood coffins, stone sarcophagi, jewelry, and elsewhere. Its omnipresence suggests a protective role.

I have been collecting tribal art and antiques for well over 25 years, my collecting trips have taken me to many distant countries, the artifacts of interest are authentic tribal and ethnographic implements used in divination and healing.

my travels have taken me to out of the way places where there are no cars or hotels, some of the remote places are only reachable by foot , so I often take long treks into the bush to find some of these rarepieces, but mostly its a question of being in the right place at the right time , my collectionconsistsof ethnographicmaterial from animist tribal peoples of Africa Asia and south East Asia
