An original Civil War letter from Lemuel Foss, 13th New Hampshire Infantry at HQ, 12th NHV Dec 18, 1862 to father describing the past week- shelling the city of Fredericksburg, a night crossing the River on pontoons, looting the Town, boys make a fire from a pianoforte, destroying everything they can, writer has many things to send home incl a piece of the piano & childs drawers, rebs are stripping our dead for clothes, street fighting under heavy shelling, we made 3 charges on stone works under canister & grape, retreat over open ground, back on picket, heavy losses, Gilman Hall wounded., etc. 7pp ink, 8 x 5\" VG.
