This vessel is a wonderfully well preservedexample of a classic Roman style. Of extremely pleasing and elegant from with a round, globularbody and tall, cylindrical neck.These slender necked unguentaria are among the most aesthetically pleasing of the ancientRoman glassmaker\'s craft.

Withglass so desired by the elite ofRoman society,this beautifulpiece would have been intended for use as an unguentarium, a containerfor expensivecosmetic oils and perfumes.The long neck of the vessel is ingeniously designed to discourage the evaporation of its preciouscontents.

The satirist Martial ridiculed many Roman public figures for smothering their hair and bodies with costly scented oils, yet a passion for fine cosmetics remained one of the constants of Roman daily life in all parts of the Empire. Facial beauty was something every wealthy Roman woman strived for, and a daily ritual of bathing and cosmetic toiletry preceded her round of social engagements.
