We are listing this beautiful very rarely seen 1813 gilded and repousse decorated Georgian sterling silver scoop shaped caddy spoon (with a mother of pearl handle) by the Birmingham silversmith Samuel Pemberton. Caddy spoons are one of the smallest, most decorative, and most rarely seen pieces of specialized silver used by the Georgian gentry - in this case, to transfer tea leaves to the teapot from the tea caddy (box), when tea was an extremely rare and valuable commodity, and ones this fancy are very uncommon. The original caddy spoons from the Orient were frequently small shells which fit in the tea caddy, which is why the English silver ones are commonly shell shaped with very short handles. However this spoon is much more unusual - it has a wonderful gilded and repousse decorated scoop shaped bowl, a pretty mother of pearl handle, and it is marked on the inside of its bowl with a duty mark facing right, a lion passant, the Birmingham anchor, the date letter p (used in 1813-1814), and an SP maker\'s mark. This mark was recorded in 1784 by Birmingham silversmith Samuel Pemberton (see page 353 of Jackson\'s Silver & Gold Marks). The reference book on caddy spoons, CADDY SPOONS An Illustrated Guide, has several examples of Pemberton\'s spoons (although perhaps none as nice as this one), and notes on page 41 that he was \"amongst the greatest of all the caddy-spoon makers.\" The spoon is over 4 inches long, has a bowl 1.25 inches across, weighs .4 ounces, it is beautifully shaped, gilded, and decorated, has a wonderful little mother of pearl handle, and it is in very good condition. There is a very, very tiny flake off the bottom edge of the handle tip (see the last picture for a closeup), but it could easily be smoothed out. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the spoon has not been professionally polished). A beautiful little very rarely seen piece of extremely decorative Georgian silver.
