Of life at an army camp on the plains in thedays of the Indian wars, of General Custer and his family and his men, thisbook stands as a classic.

ThisFirst Editionbook contains theinsightful description of garrison and camp life by the wife of GeorgeArmstrong Custer. Due to the isolation of the Calvary posts she says they oftenfelt as separate from the rest of the world as if they had been living on adesert island. She also answers questions that were often posed to herconcerning their occupations, amusements and housekeeping.

General George Custer was ordered to the Dakotasin the spring of 1873 and Elizabeth Custer\'s Boots and Saddles (the title comesfrom the bugle call for the cavalry to mount) chronicles their life until thegeneral\'s death in 1876.

A counterpoint to the purely military memoir, her account provides details about everyday garrison life at Fort AbrahamLincoln, including sketches of townspeople, Indians, camp followers, andsoldiers, as well as daily routines, and special amusements. The Custer’s livedin the Dakotas when it was still the \"Wild West\" and western legendssuch as Buffalo Bill and Rain in the Face also stride through the pages of thisbook.

Courage, grit, compassion, and humor...ElizabethCuster had them all, and they are evident here. Boots and Saddles is one of thefew books of military life in the 1800\'s from a woman\'s perspective andinvaluable for that reason alone, but it is doubly important for the light itsheds on George Custer. Fun reading as well!

Although Elizabeth lived fifty-seven years after her husband\'s death, she kept her marriage vows, fulfilling what she believed were her responsibilities as \"the widow of a national hero\" by lecturing around the world. Known throughout her life for her undying devotion to her husband, she was the only officer\'s wife to live in a tent on the edges of the Civil War battlefield, ride in the ranks with the soldiers, and accompany the 7th Cavalry on many of its expeditions. During those adventures, she wore her own uniformed dresses to show her dedication to her husband and the US Army. Forever a heated topic for debate, the controversy of George Armstrong Custer and his influence on the West fueled Libbie Custer\'s efforts to author three books on her husband\'s military career and her lifelong mission to counter the claim by then US President Ulysses S. Grant the defeat at Little Big Horn was solely due to Custer\'s leadership.
