Two extraordinary pieces of Japanese Satsuma-ware. The vase stands a bit over twelve inches tall and is about eight inches at it\'s widest. It remains in exquisite condition, with just a tiny age crack near the mouth(see photos). The painting is superb, and reflects the tasteful decoration so predominate in the Meiji period. The Censer is equally exquisite and bears the mark of the Shimazu clan along with the mark of the artist, in this case Shuzan. These two came as a pair, and are so similar in style that I believe they belong together, and have thus decided not to seperate them. The lidded censer stands about five and a half inches tall and is nearly five wide. As to my interpretation of the Shuzan mark, I spent quite a good deal of time looking through Japanese marks on Satsuma-ware, and the bottom of the mark matches exactly a Shuzan mark I found on the most reputeable site I have yet to discover on the subject, that being the Gotteburg website on Asian ceramics. The only piece of the mark missing seems to be the upside down \"U\", or half a square that seems to be simply a border. I could be wrong, and would welcome any input on the subject. Please look through the pictures carefully, as they really tell the story of how magnificent these pieces truly are. Please don\'t hesitate to ask any questions and thanks for looking, Dan.
