\"THE BROKEN LEATHER\" is actually two sculptures together: the beautifully proportioned Thoroughbred horse and the elegant huntsman standing alongside. Created in 1971 by famed sculptor Marilyn Newmark, it is a hallmark of her exceptional artistry. The title refers to the just-torn left stirrup leather that has caused the pair to pull up quickly.The work is characterized by the artist\'s precise attention to detail. The rider\'s hat ribbons point upward, indicating that he is a member of the hunt. He holds both reins and a coiled whip, suggesting that he is the whipper-in. Newmark, herself a member of the Meadowbrook Hounds and Smithtown Hunt on Long Island, N.Y., has imbued the pair with a sense of urgency, as they\'ve stopped abruptly in mid-gallop. The gorgeous horse\'s raised head differs from Newmark\'s larger edition of the same title, in which the horse\'s head is lower than the man\'s. Here, heads up, they are focused together on watching the action of horses and hounds ahead.The piece is in excellent condition with no verdigris or other signs of wear. Eighth in a limited edition of of ten, the length is 17 1/4\", the height is 14 1/2\" and the width is 5 1/4\". Mounted on a dark green marble base, it is inscribed on the bronze ground with \"1971 M Newmark NSS SAA.\"This sculpture is especially distinctive both for its rarity as well as its beauty.
