SIR EDWARD COLEY BURNE-JONES (1833-1898) Major British artist & designer, associate of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, collaborator & friend of William Morris. As well as paintings, Burne-Jones is known for his work with stained glass. Studied at Birmingham School of Art & Exeter College, Oxford. Works held by institutions & collections worldwide.
The Alexander McGrigor memorial window at Bute Hall, Glasgow University. This was a major commission for Morris & Co. The poet designs used were by Burne-Jones, Ford Madox Brown & J. H. Dearle. The significant point of interest in this particular commission is that Burne-Jones specifically updated some of his designs for this particular project.
This item is an important & original watercolour painting, one of, or possible the unique Morris & Co cartoon made up for the Alexander McGrigor Memorial window at Bute Hall, Glasgow University. It may have been drawn & painted by J. H. Dearle himself.
Drawn on artist board. I have the original frame.
Dimensions: approx 24 x 14 inches. Unframed.
Staining & worm holes to the perimeter edge but the main body of the work is in excellent condition. The colours remain bright & strong.
