CIRCA 1280
This is a unique Gothic Batarde manuscript leaf from a Breviary, in Latin, Use of Rome, on vellum with numerous beautiful illuminated red and blue letters, with striking trails of opposite blue and red penned linework and initials, and most notably, 2 large 5-line gold miniated initials with colorful floral decorative borders, themselves burnished with thick, shining liquid gold circles in miniature painted forms, as shown. Certainly last quarter of the 13th century, probably penned in Italy or Southern France. Gorgeously illuminated medieval handwritten RED-BLUE illuminated initials throughout, with beautiful singular black, red, and brown gothic batarde/ post carolingian handwriting in varied sizes, complexly arranged and created with the utmost in precision, a great relic of the care and time taken to make these pages. Fine thin vellum parchment in excellent condition with minor traces of aging and marginal soiling. Red rubricated. 30 lines of text in two columns. As shown. Measures 3.75\" x 5.25\".
Over 700 years Old, this is a truly rare and worthy of a museum.
