A beautifully illustrated early set of commentaries on both the old and new testaments.

Featuring a frontispiece to volume II of Matthew Henry, and an engraved plate depicting Job, and twenty-eight delightfully engraved plates to volume one.

The extended title reads \"Wherein each Chapter is Summed up in its Contents; the Scarred Tert Inserted at Large in Distinct Paragraphs; Each Paragraph Reduced to its Proper Heads; the Sense Given; and Largely Illustrated With Practical Remarks and Observations. Forming the Most Complete Family Bible Ever Published.\"

Originally published in six volumes at the start of the 18th Century, Henry\'s work was hugely influential, being anexhaustive verse by verse study of the Bible. After the author\'s death, in 1714, the work was finished by thirteen other nonconformist ministers, partly based upon notes taken by Henry\'s hearers. Henry\'s commentaries are primarily exegetical, dealing with the scripture text as presented, with his prime intention being explanation, for practical and devotional purposes.

Famous evangelical Protestant preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon used and heartily commended the work, with Whitefield reading it through four times. Spurgeon stated, \"Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least.\"

With Elizabeth Field\'s bookplate to the front pastedown of both volumes, dated 1813.

CONDITION

In original calf bindings. Externally, a trifle rubbed with wear to extremities and spines, both volumes have loss to the backstrip and calf is worn on all boards. All boards are detached but present. Internally, both volumes binding is tender and in places held by the cords only or detached. Pages are intermittently bright, with various instances offoxing and handling marks. Tide marks affecting first sixty pages of volume one, with closed tears to four plates. Title page to volume one has been repaired with tape. Overall: POOR.
