Very rare, original, ca1850, Illustrated California Gold Rush Letter Sheet featuring the Gold Rush Boomtown of Nevada City. This exceptionally rare, Illustrated California Letter Sheet is titled simply \"Nevada City\" and was published by Forrest & Border of San Francisco. The Woodblock illustrated Lettersheet / Illustrated Stationary measures approx. 12 1/4\" by 7 3/4\" and is a complete, single sheet Lettersheet (back is blank for use in letter writing).

This historically important, California Letter Sheet features what may be THE earliest view of Nevada City, California - a Gold Rush Boomtown first settled in 1849, during the California Gold Rush, as Nevada (meaning \"snow-covered\", a reference to the snow-topped mountains in the area). The \"Gold Tunnel\" on the north side of Deer Creek was the city\'s first mine, being located in 1850.The first saw mill built in Nevada City was on Deer Creek, just above the town, in August, 1850, and was built by Lewis & Son, with a water wheel. In 1850-51, it was the most important mining town in the state, Nevada County being the leading gold-mining county in the state.

The Illustration depicts Nevada City as it existed ca1850 with two streets both lined by mostly \"false front\" saloons, hotels, general stores and mining related businesses. The view of the Town depicts an exceptionally primitive Gold Rush Boomtown in the earliest configuration.

We have been able to find only a single example of this exceptionally rare California Letter Sheet in any Library or Museum Collection - that being held in the UC Berkeley, Bancroft Library. We believe this Letter Sheet to be both exceptionally rare and historically important!!

This fantastic, ca1850 California Gold Rush period Illustrated Broadside Lettersheet is in very good condition - generally clean and crisp with some wear and loss at the right hand edge and at the upper right hand corner affecting the very edge of the blank margin area only. There is a single, very small spot of staining in the lower margin and some very light and unobtrusive horizontal and vertical creases. Overall this historically important, California Gold Rush Letter Sheet is very well preserved and will display beautifully with a quality matting and framing.
